Cancers of the head and neck include cancers that start in several places in the head and throat, not including brain cancers or cancers of the eye.These cancers can start :● In the sinuses (the spaces around the nose on the inside of the skull) .● Inside and behind the nose.● In the mouth, including the tongue, the gums, and the roof of the mouth.● In the back of the mouth and the throat (pharynx), which includes three sections called the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx.● In the larynx (voice box).● On the lips, although cancer on the lips is a type of skin cancer.● In the glands that make saliva for the mouth, but those are relatively rare.In the mouth, cancer can cause :● A white or red sore that does not heal on the gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth.● Swelling in the jaw.● Unusual bleeding or pain in the mouth.● A lump or thickening.● Problems with dentures.At the back of the mouth (pharynx), cancer can cause :● Trouble breathing or speaking.● A lump or thickening.● Trouble chewing or swallowing food.● A feeling that something is caught in the throat.● Pain in the throat that won’t go away.● Pain or ringing in the ears or trouble hearing.In the voice box (larynx), cancer can cause :● Pain when swallowing.● Ear pain.In the sinuses and nasal cavity, cancer can cause :● Blocked sinuses that don’t clear.● Sinus infections that do not respond to treatment with antibiotics.● Bleeding through the nose.● Headaches.● Pain and swelling around the eyes.● Pain in the upper teeth.● Problems with dentures.You can lower your risk of getting head and neck cancer in several ways :● Don’t smoke. If you smoke, quit. Quitting smoking lowers the risk for cancer.● Don’t use smokeless tobacco products.● Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.● Talk to your doctor about HPV vaccination. The HPV vaccine can prevent new infections with the types of HPV that most often cause oropharyngeal and other cancers. Vaccination is recommended only for people at certain ages.

The thyroid gland (also called simply the thyroid) is located in front of the neck. It looks sort of like a butterfly with one wing on each side of the neck.Some things that may make getting thyroid cancer more likely include :● Getting too much radiation around the neck area, especially when you are young.● Having certain genetic conditions inherited from parents.Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer :● A lump or swelling on the side of the neck is the most common symptom.● Having trouble breathing.● Having trouble swallowing.● Having a hoarse voice.

Lung cancer begins in the lungs and may spread to lymph nodes or other organs in the body, such as the brain. Cancer from other organs also may spread to the lungs. When cancer cells spread from one organ to another, they are called metastases.Lung cancers usually are grouped into two main types called small cell and non-small cell. These types of lung cancer grow differently and are treated differently. Non-small cell lung cancer is more common than small cell lung cancer.Different people have different symptoms for lung cancer. Some people have symptoms related to the lungs. Some people whose lung cancer has spread to other parts of the body (metastasized) have symptoms specific to that part of the body. Some people just have general symptoms of not feeling well. Most people with lung cancer don’t have symptoms until the cancer is advanced. Lung cancer symptoms may include● Coughing that gets worse or doesn’t go away.● Chest pain.● Shortness of breath.● Wheezing.● Coughing up blood.● Feeling very tired all the time.● Weight loss with no known cause.Other changes that can sometimes occur with lung cancer may include repeated bouts of pneumonia and swollen or enlarged lymph nodes (glands) inside the chest in the area between the lungs.Lung cancer is treated in several ways, depending on the type of lung cancer and how far it has spread. People with non-small cell lung cancer can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these treatments. People with small cell lung cancer are usually treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Dr. Vikas Gupta is a well-known cancer surgeon practicing in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. He completed his Masters in Surgery from Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Hospital and Medical College, Mumbai. Thereafter he did his super specialty training through Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Surgical Oncology from Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad. Post completion of his training he continued in BIACH and RI as a Consultant Surgical Oncologist. During his tenure, he further honed his skills in minimally invasive cancer surgeries including laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. He performed all major and minor cancer surgeries as a Consultant Surgical Oncologist. He was selected and also won bursary awards to present papers in International conferences like the Society of Surgical Oncology Conference (USA), the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology Conference, the Korean Society of Surgical Oncology Conference, South Korea, and the European Society of Surgical Oncology Conference, Netherland. Besides, he has also presented and has won awards in national conference organized by the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology. He appeared and cleared the European Board of Surgical Oncology qualification exam and was awarded the Fellowship of the European Board of Surgeons during his visit to the Netherland. He had also visited the Department of Surgical Oncology at Nebraska Médical Center, Nebraska, the United States of America to gain training in oncology on par international standards. He got an opportunity to train in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Nippon Medical School, Chiba Hokusoh Hospital, Japan. During his international training, he learned advanced management protocols and surgical techniques for various cancers from renowned surgeons. He was selected as Specialty Senior Registrar in the Department of GI and HPB at the prestigious TATA memorial hospital, Mumbai in 2019. He completed his specialty training and thereafter was selected for Medtronic Fellowship in GI and HPB surgery in TATA Memorial Hospital. After finishing his training and further refining his skills, having worked in centers of excellence, Dr. Gupta has joined as Assistant Professor, Surgical Oncology in the Department of General Surgery at MGM Medical College, Kamothe to further disseminate the knowledge he has gained and train budding surgeons. With the advanced training that he has received, Dr. Gupta can independently perform surgeries for Gastrointestinal Cancers, Head and Neck Cancers, Breast Cancers, Gynecological Cancer, and Thoracic cancers. He believes in giving the right care to the right patient so as to help cancer patients win their battle with cancer. His goal is to provide holistic and individualized care to every cancer patient he treats, so as to make their journey comfortable.
